Cheniere’s Sabine Pass liquefaction facility has shipped a record monthly amount of LNG cargoes in May since it started exporting the fuel in February last year.

The Sabine Pass plant in Lousiana, currently the only such facility to ship U.S. shale gas overseas, exported 18 cargoes in May, totaling about 61 billion cubic feet, the Energy Information Administration said in its weekly natural gas report.

As of April this year, LNG from the Sabine Pass plant had reached 20 of the 39 LNG importing countries around the world, according to Cheniere.

Most of these LNG cargoes landed in Latin America and Asia.

Cheniere is developing up to six trains at its Sabine Pass terminal with each train expected to have a nominal production capacity of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum.

The Houston-based company currently ships the fuel produced at three liquefaction trains. The fourth train is currently in commissioning mode with substantial completion expected in the second half of 2017.

The US is expected to become the world’s third largest LNG exporter by 2020 after Qatar and Australia as more LNG export plants currently being built along the US Gulf Coast come on stream.
