USA: Senator Backs Up JaxPort Dredging

Senator Backs Up JaxPort Dredging

During the campaign for his third term, Senator Bill Nelson stated that he’s been working hard to secure JaxPort’s economic future.

The port of Jacksonville is a big economic engine for Northeast Florida,” he told WOKV.

Nelson noted the Panama Canal Expansion, which is projected to be finished by the end of 2014, and said: “When that happens, the port of Jacksonville wants to be able to have those big ships come in.”

In order to do that, you have to dredge JaxPort down to a depth of 50 feet,” he added.

Before a July visit by President Barack Obama, the completion date for an Army Corps feasibility study on JaxPort harbor deepening was pushed up from 2014 to April 2013, according to jacksonville.com.
