USA: Supreme Court to Review Savannah River Dredging Permit Issues

According to The Post and Courier, the S.C. Supreme Court this morning will consider who has authority over Savannah River matters, such as deepening the waterway.

The question goes to the heart of a contentious issue that has caused political rifts in Columbia, and friction between South Carolina and Georgia, which share the river.

A coalition of environmental groups and the S.C. Savannah River Maritime Commission are challenging the state Department of Health and Environmental Control’s authority, related to Georgia’s plan to deepen the Savannah.

The Georgia Ports Authority wants to deepen the river to accommodate larger container ships bound for the Port of Savannah, a key rival for the Port of Charleston.
