Van Oord: land reclamation for KNPC’s LNG project progresses

Rotterdam-based Van Oord on Tuesday said work continues on land reclamation in Kuwait for Kuwait National Petroleum Company’s (KNPC) LNG import facility. 

The Dutch company has already completed the reclamation of 65 million cubic metres of sand and extensive soil improvement for the Al-Zour Refinery will produce 615,000 barrels per day once completed.

Van Oord noted this was the first phase of KNPC’s investment programme for the new refinery.

The project further includes land reclamation for the construction of a port and the first phase of an LNG import facility.

As reported in March, Hyundai E&C, Hyundai Engineering and Korea Gas Corporation (Kogas) consortium has won a KRW3.6 trillion (US$2.93 billion) contract to build a liquefied natural gas plant in Kuwait.

The consortium has been contracted to build eight LNG storage tanks and the docking facilities at the Al-Zour LNG import terminal, 90 kilometers south of Kuwait’s capital, Kuwait City.

The construction of the facility is scheduled to last 58 months and be completed in 2020.
