Vessels Approaching Misrata, Libya Subject to Airstrikes

The Libyan Air Force has issued a notice saying that any vessels approaching the port of Misrata, Libya will be subject to airstrikes beginning 9 January, NATO’s Shipping Centre informed.

A Greek-owned tanker was bombed in an airstrike outside the port of Derna on 4 January. The attack saw two crew members die in the attack.

This incident highlights the uncertain security situation in waters near Libya, NATO said.

The Shipping Centre added that vessels intending to call at Misrata are advised to contact port and flag state authorities and local shipping agents for further instruction.

In addition, vessels transiting through the eastern Mediterranean are encouraged to remain well clear of Libyan waters.

“Vessels calling at Libyan ports are advised to exercise increased vigilance and maintain close communication with port and flag state authorities and local shipping agents in accordance with the ISPS code,” the Centre added.
