VIDEO: Freighter Sinks in the Black Sea

St. Kitts and Nevis-flagged general cargo ship Fort Azov sank yesterday in the Black Sea, one mile off the coast near the town of Ayancik in Turkey’s Sinop province, the Haber Turk reports.

The 1970-built freighter was carrying a 3,000 ton shipment of wood from Varna, Bulgaria, when it developed a heavy list portside after the cargo shifted in stormy weather.

The Turkish Coast Guard safely evacuated the captain of the 3,261 dwt ship and eleven crewmen, and transported them to a local hospital.

The salvage of the ship will be attempted once the weather improves.

There have been no reports of pollution or injuries to the crew at this point.
