Video: Ireland’s ocean energy test sites

Take a look at the video released by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) that features Jim Gannon, CEO of SEAI, introducing the three ocean energy test sites available in Ireland.

Ireland is actively committed to harnessing its abundant wave, tidal and offshore wind energy resources and is dedicated to developing an indigenous ocean energy industry in the process, according to SEAI.

The three test sites featured in the video are:

  • LiR National Ocean Test Facility in Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork
  • Marine and Renewable Energy Test Site in the Galway Bay
  • Atlantic Marine Energy Test Site (AMETS) off the coast of Belmullet, Co. Mayo

Lir National Ocean Test Facility consists of state of the art wave tanks and electrical rigs that allow for scaled testing in a controlled environment.

Galway Bay Marine and Renewable Energy Test Site is Ireland’s ¼ scale ocean energy test site is located within the Galway Bay 1.5km offshore in water depths ranging from 20m – 23m. The lease for the site has been held by the Marine Institute since 2006.

The Atlantic Marine Energy Test Site (AMETS) is being developed by SEAI to facilitate testing of full scale wave energy converters in an open ocean environment.
