Welltec Successfully Completes Valve Closing in Gas Production Well Offshore Malaysia

A buildup of pressure in the annulus was detected in a recently completed, large bore, gas production well offshore Malaysia. Leak detection tools run into the well quickly revealed that tubing connections located at 333 m and 394 m were leaking and required recompletion of the upper completion.

A decision was quickly made to close the fluid loss valve located at 1800 m MD which would save rig time by avoiding a costly and time consuming well kill. Welltec had previously been identified as a contingency for opening the same valve if needed and were therefore available. The tools were deployed and the 9 5/8” valve closed as planned, thereby saving both recompletion costs and time. This is the first time such a valve has been closed on wireline and the operation successfully proved the viability and efficiency of the adapted approach. The package used consisted of the Welltec Release Device®, Well Tractor® 318XR, Well Stroker® 318 XS and Well Key® 318.
