Wintershall Dea obtains drilling permit for appraisal well in Norwegian Sea

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has granted Wintershall Dea a drilling permit for an appraisal well located in the Norwegian Sea. 

The well 6604/5-2 S will be drilled from the Scarabeo 8 drilling rig after concluding the drilling of wildcat well 6604/6-1 for Wintershall Dea in production license 894.

Wintershall Dea received consent from the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) to drill two wells in the Norwegian Sea –  6604/5-2 S and 6604/6-1 – using the Scarabeo 8 rig in November 2019. The wells have been given the prospect names of Balderbrå and Gullstjerne, respectively. The drilling was scheduled to start in December 2019 and would last for at least 44 days for well Balderbrå and at least 51 days for Gullstjerne.

Later in November, the NPD granted Wintershall Dea a drilling permit for the Gullstjerne well 6604/6-1. The NPD has now also given the drilling permit to Wintershall for the second well, the Balderbrå well 6604/5-2 S.

The drilling program for well 6604/5-2 S relates to the drilling of an appraisal well in production license 894. Wintershall Dea is the operator with an ownership interest of 40 percent. Other licensees are Equinor (40 percent) and Petoro (20 percent).

The area in this license consists of part of block 6604/5. The well will be drilled about 120 kilometres southwest of the Aasta Hansteen field.

Production license 894 was awarded on February 10, 2017 (APA 2016). This is the third well to be drilled in the license.
