Woodside: Wheatstone LNG begins phased start-up offshore

Chevron-led Wheatstone LNG project west of Onslow, Australia has progressed its commissioning phase both on the offshore platform and Train 1. 

First LNG is still expected in mid-2017 with production to kick off at the second liquefaction train six to eight months later, Woodside, a holder of a 13 percent stake in the project noted in its monthly report on Thursday. At full capacity, the two liquefaction trains will be producing 8.9 million tons per annum of LNG.

Project operator has switched to a phased start-up offshore to ensure bulk gas is available onshore for LNG train 1 start-up.

Woodside also added that permanent power has been established at all facilities and compressor mechanical runs have started for the first liquefaction train.

Speaking of the project activities Woodside CEO Peter Coleman said the company continues to work with the project operator with final offshore and onshore hook-up and commissioning activities.

Wheatstone LNG is a joint venture between Australian units of Chevron (64.14 percent), Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (13.4 percent), Woodside (13 percent), and Kyushu Electric Power Company (1.46 percent), together with PE Wheatstone, part owned by JERA (8 percent).
