DMA Head Official Candidate for IMO Top Post

The Danish Government confirmed official nomination of Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority Andreas Nordseth as a candidate for the post as Secretary General of the IMO.

The post will become vacant on 1 January 2016 as present Secretary General Koji Sekimizu will resign from his position at the end of 2015.

It is expected that the election will be announced in December 2014 and will be held by the IMO Council in June/July 2015.

Danish Minister for Business and Growth Henrik Sass Larsen said:

“Mr. Andreas Nordseth is a strong candidate for the job. He has many years of experience in the maritime field and, as Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority, he sets the course for quality shipping both domestically and internationally.

The decisions taken by the IMO are of decisive importance to Danish and international shipping. The IMO must continue to promote quality shipping globally, while being capable of meeting the new challenges faced by the Organization. I have no doubt that Mr. Andreas Nordseth will be able to head the Organization in this work.”

Mr. Andreas Nordseth has been with the Danish Maritime Authority under the Ministry of Business and Growth since 1991. He became Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority in 2009.

Aside to Denmark, Cyprus has also set its sights on the top position of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with the Acting Director of the Department of Merchant Shipping Andreas Chrysostomou as potential candidate, according to the Financial Mirror.
