HHI Delivers Very Large Crude Carrier DABA to OSC

Oman Shipping Company on January 6th 2012 took delivery of one of their latest Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) the DABA. The VLCC DABA was built and delivered from Hyundai Heavy Industries co. Ltd’s (HHI) Yard in Ulsan, South Korea.

DABA has a 317,000 deadweight ton (DWT) capacity, featuring 333 m in length overall, 60 m in beam and a design draft of 21 m. This is OSC’s third VLCC delivery, out of another of five, from HHI, and is the Company’s 11th out of a future fleet of 17 VLCCs. With this, OSC will have 6 vessels in VL8 Pool. International Tanker Management (ITM), in Dubai, will technically managed vessel.

Since commercial operations began in 2003, OSC now has a fleet of 30 vessels, and an order book of 11 vessels to be delivered between now and 2013. The DWT capacity of the current fleet is around 4.6 million DWT, increasing to around 8 million DWT once the order book is delivered.

Hyundai Heavy (HHI), the world’s number one shipbuilder, leads the shipbuilding industry with a 15% share of the market. The Hyundai shipyard stretches over four kilometers along the coast of Mipo Bay in Ulsan, Korea. The Shipbuilding Division is capable of building all types of ships to meet various demands from its clients. It has nine large-scale dry docks with seven huge ‘Goliath Cranes’. Since the shipyard’s groundbreaking in 1972, Hyundai Heavy’s Shipbuilding Division has garnered many awards and set many records within the shipbuilding industry.

The Division reached the 10 million DWT production mark, and reached the milestone of 20 million DWT in 1988, 30 million DWT in 1991, 40 million DWT in 1994, 50 million DWT in 1997, and 100 million DWT in 2005.

Hyundai Heavy has delivered more than 1,593 ships to 258 ship-owners in 48 countries since 1972.
