Shell gets approval for Bratwurst well offshore Australia

Oil major Shell has received an approval from Australian authorities for its environment plan to drill an exploration well in AC/P64 permit as part of the Bratwurst-1 drilling campaign offshore Western Australia.

Shell submitted the plan in late January 2019. The well, named Bratwurst-1, will be located within the Northern Browse Basin in Commonwealth Waters with a water depth of approximately 155 meters.

Following a couple of requests for further information by the Australian regulator NOPSEMA and Shell’s submissions to those requests, the plan was approved on Wednesday, May 15.

Shell plans to use a semi-submersible offshore drilling rig for the operation and is targeting gas/condensate.

If significant gas/condensate volumes are discovered during this campaign, there is a future potential for a tie-back to the giant Prelude FLNG unit where production started last month. The Prelude facility is located approximately 160 km southwest of the approximate well location.

The environment plan also covers potential for future sidetracking and/or testing in the event of exploration success.

Drilling is proposed to start as early as mid-2019 and drilling activities are expected to take approximately 45 days.
