2GRobotics' Laser Scanners Capable of High Definition Imagery (Canada)

Although underwater applications were the primary goal in the development and design of the ULS-100 and ULS-500 laser scanners, they are equally capable of high definition imagery in an in-air scenario.

It is important to note that the scanners do not require any additional parts or modification to the hardware to switch between water and air scanning environments. The only difference is a small calibration file the scanning software accesses prior to data collection. This pair of calibration files comes standard with the purchase or rental of the ULS-100 or ULS-500.

The function of the scanners remains the same in a water or air scenario. The greatest benefits to use in-air would be the increased ease in mobilization as well as a dramatically increased scanning range. The average time for scans also decreases as the filtering functions designed to mitigate the effects of silt in the water would be unnecessary and less samples per scanning angle would be required.

Both the ULS-100 and the ULS-500 are in a constant state of development. Currently differential imaging is being explored so that the optical sensor on the ULS systems will take each image twice, once with the laser line and once without. Calculating the difference in brightness values between these images will allow the laser scanners to work reliably in much brighter conditions than previously thought possible. The difficulty in creating an entirely dark atmosphere above water would be solved with this development and would greatly increase the flexibility in ULS underwater deployment.

Due to the capability of the the ULS systems to function below and above water; they are an ideal tool for semi submerged structures and for teams who do a variety of survey and measurement projects.
