ESS Extends Product Line for Oceanographic Use

Engineered Syntactic Systems (ESS), a global supplier of foam buoyancy solutions, announced plans to extend its line of high performance syntactic products to support more traditional oceanographic implementations.

ESS Extends Product Line for Oceanographic Use

The addition of modular product options enables ESS to supply more customers with great performance in a wider range of densities.

The experienced team at ESS has been serving the oceanographic industry for over 30 years. As a leading supplier of flotation technologies for advanced customer applications, ESS combines engineering, design and manufacturing know-how to deliver the best depth performance in the business – from the surface to depths of 11,000 meters. ESS syntactics are lightweight, engineered foams designed to withstand significant hydrostatic pressure while delivering optimum performance.

“We are expanding our product offering to provide customers with a one-stop-shop for best-in-class buoyancy products,” says Thomas Murray, managing partner at Engineered Syntactic Systems. “We recently discovered that there is a need for readily available, off-the-shelf products such as cable floats and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) buoys. We are nimble enough to respond quickly and work closely with customers to provide cost-effective solutions that will address these needs.”

As a trusted partner of naval and oceanographic organizations, ESS has supplied products for some of the most exciting under-sea exploration projects in the last decade. Designed to meet the rigorous demands of undersea environments, ESS syntactics are a critical component for manned and unmanned exploration vehicles; AUVs, ROVs & HOVs, plus a wide array of flotation and buoyancy applications.

Recently ESS was chosen by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI), to supply new syntactic foam for their HOV “Alvin” Sub upgrade program. Alvin is a 3-person research submarine that, since its launch in 1964, has allowed more than 2,500 explorers to visit the sea floor. With safety, reliability and depth performance being critical considerations, ESS’ quality and reputation set them apart from the competition.

In addition to its custom and off-the-shelf syntactic foams, ESS offers specially formulated void filler “kits” which have been used in applications such as submarines, by naval shipyards across the US. Specialty core materials, diving bell foams, thermal insulation and acoustic isolators complete the product offering. On-site design and engineering services allow ESS to assist customers with even the most challenging projects.
