Japan: Utilities December LNG Usage Surges

The ten regional electric power companies in Japan consumed 4,981,194 mt of LNG in December, a year-on-year rise of 32.4 percent, according to the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan (FEPC).

The power companies received 5,021,856 mt of LNG in December, a rise of 27.3 percent on year.

Japan’s monthly LNG imports have been rising steadily year on year, due to the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

The country’s LNG import prices have been rising due in part to increased demand for spot LNG but mainly to rising crude oil benchmarks.
