On March 5 and 6, CMA CGM and SIPG Energy performed the bunkering of 3,643 tons of biomethanol, from suppliers including Shanghai Electric Group, for the CMA CGM Osmium at Yangshan Port’s Shengdong Terminal in China.

In addition to this being CMA CGM’s first biomethanol bunkering, this sets a new national record for the largest single biomethanol bunkering operation carried out at a Chinese port, the company said.

The 13,000 TEU biomethanol dual‑fuel CMA CGM Osmium containership, for which a naming ceremony was held earlier this month, will soon operate on the M2X service connecting Asia with Mexico.

“The completion of China’s largest single biomethanol bunkering operation with CMA CGM marks a significant leap in Shanghai Port’s biomethanol bunkering capacity. SIPG Energy will continue to enhance its integrated capabilities in biomethanol resource coordination, storage and transportation support, and bunkering services, deepen cooperation with leading shipping enterprises, and help build Shanghai Port into a global sustainable energy bunkering hub,” said Luo Wenbin, Managing Director of SIPG Energy.

As part of its commitment to achieving net zero carbon by 2050, CMA CGM is preparing to operate around 200 dual‑fuel container vessels by 2031, all capable of running on low‑carbon energy, including bio and e-LNG as well as bio and e-methanol.

The company’s long-standing collaboration with partners SIPG Energy and Shanghai Electric Group includes a long‑term LNG bunkering partnership with SIPG and the framework agreement on long-term biomethanol supply signed by CMA CGM.

“The biomethanol bunkering of the CMA CGM OSMIUM is more than a technical success, it marks a defining moment in our decarbonization journey. Together with SIPG Energy, we are demonstrating that cleaner, low‑carbon shipping is no longer an aspiration but a reality. This milestone strengthens our resolve to work closely with our partners to accelerate shipping decarbonization and propel our industry toward a more sustainable future,” said Farid Trad, Vice President Group Energy Transition, CMA CGM Group.
