After Prysmian, Siemens Energy confirmed as supplier for UK’s Eastern Green Link 4

Following the preferred bidder status from July 2025, Siemens Energy has now secured a contract for the delivery of two high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations for the fourth out of five subsea electricity superhighways between Scotland and England.

The 2 GW Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea power link will run between Fife and Norfolk, with its 530-kilometer cable to be able to transmit enough electricity to power the equivalent of 1.5 million UK homes.

As part of the contract awarded by SP Energy Networks and National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), Siemens Energy will deliver two converter stations, one in Fife, Scotland, and one in Norfolk, England. The company was named the preferred bidder for the scope in July 2025.

Italian cabling giant Prysmian is supplying the subsea and underground electricity cables under a £2 billion (over €2.3 billion) contract announced last month.

ScottishPower, through its parent company Iberdrola, recently secured £600 million (around €693 million) in financing from the National Wealth Fund to support the development of the link.

“Eastern Green Link 4 is a critical project for strengthening the UK’s electricity network and enabling more renewable power to flow between Scotland and England. Working with our partners, at SP Energy Networks, National Grid Electricity Transmission and Prysmian, we’re investing in the supply chain to deliver this nationally significant HVDC infrastructure,” said Darren Davidson, UK Vice President for Siemens Energy.

“With more than 7,000 people employed by Siemens Energy across the UK, including at our centre of excellence in Manchester, this project highlights how investment in grid infrastructure supports skilled jobs, energy security and the UK’s long-term transition to a more resilient energy system.”

EGL4 is one of five subsea links being developed along the east coast of Britain. Together, these projects will strengthen the resilience of the electricity network, reduce grid constraints and enable greater volumes of renewable energy to flow efficiently between Scotland and England to millions of homes, strengthening UK energy security, the UK National Grid said.

Subject to planning consent, the project is expected to enter main construction in 2028 and is scheduled to be completed in 2033.

SP Energy Networks and NGET are also building the Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) project together, expected to be completed in 2029.

“Securing the international expertise of Siemens Energy and Prysmian to help us deliver this vital electricity connection is a real project milestone,” said Iain Adams, Deputy Project Director of EGL4. “These are the first of many more UK contracts to come for Eastern Green Link 4 which will increase grid capacity between Scotland and England, transporting clean power across the country and reducing constraints.”
