Karpowership upping Mexico’s energy ante with LNG-to-power project

Karpowership, Türkiye’s floating power solutions provider and owner and operator of powerships, is setting the stage to elevate the energy infrastructure game in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula with a project that will include a powership and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal vessel (LNGTS).

Karpowership has unveiled a three-year project, operating on natural gas, which is seen as the lowest-carbon hydrocarbon fuel. This will enable the firm to deploy a 250 MW powership along with an LNG terminal vessel in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula to provide dispatchable electricity in partnership with the country’s independent systems operator, CENACE.

The project, which is anticipated to support energy security in one of the country’s fastest-growing regions, is said to mark a new milestone in the expansion of the Türkiye-based company’s presence in the Americas, positioning it as an important energy partner in the region.

Zeynep Harezi Yılmaz, Commercial Director of Karpowership, underlined: “It is an honor for Karpowership to begin operations in Mexico, a strategic market for our long-term presence in the Americas. We are committed to supporting energy security on the Yucatán Peninsula by providing reliable capacity when communities and businesses need it most.”

The firm explains that the project will strengthen the electricity supply and improve grid resilience in the region. Karpowership’s integrated LNG-to-power model is currently operating in Brazil and Senegal, building on previous such projects in Indonesia.

The company expects the powership and the LNGTS to arrive in Mexico in the coming weeks, with commercial operations anticipated to begin in coordination with state and federal authorities.

The Yucatan Peninsula is deemed to be one of Mexico’s fastest-growing economic regions, which is expected to register the highest growth in electricity demand, at 3.8% annually, according to the National Electricity System Development Program 2024-2038 (PRODESEN).

The floating power solutions player elaborated: “Economic growth, population increases, and heat waves have placed sustained pressure on the region’s electricity system, highlighting the need for additional capacity. Karpowership’s powerership and LNGTS infrastructure will help provide resilience during peak demand periods and other supply disruptions.”

The project will operate under environmental safeguards aligned with Mexican regulations, including the requirements of SEMARNAT and ASEA, as well as international maritime standards, with special attention to the protection of coastal and marine ecosystems.

Karpowership’s entry into Mexico is based on its recent acquisition of a shipyard in Brownsville, Texas, and on existing operations in Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana, and the Dominican Republic, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the Americas.

The firm is adamant that its modular and integrated infrastructure can be deployed in months rather than years and relocated as energy needs evolve, avoiding the construction footprint associated with traditional ground-based thermal plants.

The company owns and operates 45 powerhips with over 8,500 MW of installed capacity, along with 11 LNG terminal vessels, serving 14 countries across four continents.
