LNG and decarbonization on Orlen-Naftogaz collaboration’s agenda

Ukraine’s state-owned energy company Naftogaz Group and Poland’s Orlen have teamed up to fortify the liquefied natural gas (LNG) arsenal and efforts to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a bid to bolster Ukraine’s energy security and support its energy transition.

Orlen and Naftogaz have signed two memoranda of understanding (MoU) laying out a framework for their further collaboration in LNG trading, use of regasification and transmission infrastructure across the Baltic Sea and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) regions, as well as the exchange of expertise in sustainability, decarbonization, sustainable transition financing, and ESG governance.

Sergii Koretskyi, Chief Executive Officer of Naftogaz, commented: “Amid the ongoing war, reliable, flexible, and diversified gas supplies remain essential for Ukraine’s energy security. This memorandum builds on our cooperation with Orlen and creates a framework for further practical steps to strengthen the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system.”

The first agreement provides the duo with the ability to assess opportunities to increase gas supply volumes and jointly use regasification terminals and gas transmission infrastructure across the Baltic region and CEE to help expand gas supply routes to Ukraine, enhance their flexibility, and provide broader access to the global LNG market.

On the other hand, the second MoU covers emissions reduction, including methane emissions, improvements in energy efficiency, the mobilization of green financing, and the preparation of reporting in line with European standards. Both deals build on existing cooperation between the two players in diversifying gas supplies and modernizing Ukraine’s energy sector.

Ireneusz Fąfara, President of the Management Board of Orlen, emphasized: “Today, energy security is no longer just about delivering raw materials. It is about the ability to respond quickly, diversify sources, ensure flexible logistics and rely on infrastructure that remains resilient even in wartime conditions. The cooperation between Orlen and Naftogaz reflects exactly this approach to the future of Ukraine and the wider region.

“We want to use our capabilities in LNG, trading, infrastructure access and the energy transition to support not only current gas supplies, but also the development of a more modern, diversified and resilient energy system in Ukraine. Reconstruction should not simply mean rebuilding what has been destroyed, but creating solutions that will strengthen the security of Ukraine and Central and Eastern Europe for decades to come.”

The cooperation with Orlen comes shortly after Naftogaz obtained LNG capacity at Lithuania’s LNG terminal, operated by KN Energies.
