USA: Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Receives Navy’s Energy Award

Ten Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) field activities were recognized by Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) for outstanding performance in energy and water management for fiscal year 2011 accomplishments during a ceremony at the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C., Oct. 12.

The SECNAV Energy Awards recognize outstanding commitment to energy and water conservation by Navy and Marine Corps activities and ships. Each year, the SECNAV Awards are presented to those ships and activities that have made notable progress toward achievement of Department of the Navy and federal goals for the reduction of energy and water consumption.

NAVSEA is taking a holistic approach to discovering, managing, prioritizing, tracking, and validating energy conservation opportunities to meet Navy leadership goals,” said Vice Adm. Kevin M. McCoy, commander, NAVSEA. “I am proud of the NAVSEA field activities’ contributions towards the Navy’s energy vision.”

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) is the overall winner for the industrial category of the 2011 SECNAV Energy and Water Management Award. PNSY achieved a 54 percent reduction from their fiscal year 2003 energy baseline and an 18 percent reduction from their fiscal year 2007 water baseline. The shipyard executed phase three of an energy savings performance contract that included compressed air improvements and condensate system repairs. Other projects included replacement of steam, compressed air and water lines and improvements to heating, ventilation and air conditioning. PNSY’s Energy Task Force also conducted a pilot energy saving competition which awarded a prize of $25,000 in energy improvements.

In addition to receiving $35,000 for use at the discretion of the commanding officer to improve quality of life and encourage further energy improvements at the shipyard, PNSY is authorized to fly the SECNAV energy flag for a one-year period beginning Oct. 12.

The SECNAV annual awards program also recognized commands achieving platinum, gold and blue levels of energy achievement during the same time period.

Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, and Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport earned the platinum level award and $5,000 for an outstanding energy program and an exceptional year for energy projection execution.

Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Carderock Division, Detachment Memphis, Tenn.; and NSWC Corona earned gold awards for demonstrating outstanding energy programs. Norfolk Naval Shipyard; NSWC Carderock Division, Bethesda; NSWC Carderock Division’s Ship Systems Engineering Station, Philadelphia, Pa.; and Naval Surface Warfare Center, Newport earned blue awards for well-rounded energy programs.

NAVSEA is committed to energy conservation and preserving and protecting the environment.
