ALE Loads Out First Wikinger Substation Jacket

Heavy transportation and lifting contractor ALE loaded-out the first of two 3,000-tonne jackets built for the Wikinger offshore substations, in Cadiz, Spain, last week.

The jacket was built by Navantia shipyard in Puerto Real for Iberdrola’s 350MW Wikinger offshore wind farm currently under construction in the German Baltic Sea.

In December 2014, Iberdrola awarded a EUR 160 million contract to Navantia to construct 29 jacket foundations to support the wind farm’s Adwen 5MW turbines, as well as two substation platforms.

The Navantia-Windar consortium delivered the first turbine jacket foundations, which were also loaded-out by ALE, to Iberdrola last week.

Wikinger will comprise 70 foundations in total, with Bladt Industries in charge of supplying the remaining 41 jackets.

The installation of the first foundations at the offshore wind farm site started in April.

The EUR 1.4 billion Wikinger is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2017.
