Anadarko confirms Mozambique LNG fatality after gunmen attacks

Anadarko-led Mozambique LNG project came under attack by gunmen on two separate occasions with one resulting in a fatality, the Woodlands-based company said in its update. 

The project came under two related attacks on the road from Mocimboa da Praia to Afungi, some 20 kilometers from the construction site, the company said.

“The first involved a convoy where six contract personnel sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were either treated or are receiving treatment, and we have accounted for all personnel. Tragically, the second attack, which involved the firm contracted to construct an airstrip for the project, resulted in one fatality,” Anadarko said.

The construction site remains on lockdown the company said, adding that no further security measures will be discussed.

“We are still working to gather information and continue to actively monitor the situation. We also remain in close contact with Government authorities to ensure appropriate measures are in place to protect our workforce,” Anadarko said.

Anadarko is developing Mozambique’s first onshore LNG facility consisting of two initial LNG trains with a total nameplate capacity of 12.88 mtpa to support the development of the Golfinho/Atum field located entirely within Offshore Area 1.

The project has already firmed up several long-term sale and purchase deals totaling over 9.5 mtpa, with the partners expecting to reach the final investment decision on the project in the first half of this year.

Anadarko Moçambique Área 1, a unit of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, operates Offshore Area 1 with a 26.5-percent working interest.

Co-venturers include ENH Rovuma Área (15 percent), Mitsui E&P Mozambique Area1 (20 percent), ONGC Videsh (10 percent), Beas Rovuma Energy Mozambique (10 percent), BPRL Ventures Mozambique (10 percent), and PTTEP Mozambique Area 1 (8.5 percent).
