APPEA supports science-based marine reserve network review

APPEA welcomed the announcement on the review of Australia’s marine reserve network made by Environment Minister Greg Hunt and Senator Richard Colbeck.

APPEA supports the Australian Government’s commitment to use rigorous science and broad consultation in establishing zoning and management plans for these reserves.

It is important that the process recognises the value of Australia’s marine economy and the need to attract investment for the exploration and development of Australia’s energy resources.

Dependable, timely and efficient access to Australia’s offshore areas for oil and gas exploration and production is essential to both Australia’s future economic prosperity and to its energy security.

Marine reserves and their management plans must be based on robust scientific assessment of defined conservation values rather than arbitrary exclusion zones.APPEA looks forward to working closely with the Australian Government, the review panel and other stakeholders on the review.
