Atkins Reports Strong Year for Power Division, Offshore Wind in Focus

In its financial results for the year ended on 31 March 2016, Atkins reported that its renewables business has further strengthened its position in the UK offshore wind market, thus contributing to a strong performance within its power division.

Overall, Atkins recorded a revenue increase of 6% to GBP 1.86 billion. The company said its Energy business has had a mixed year, with a good performance across nuclear, power and renewables businesses but with challenges in most of its oil and gas markets, with the exception of the Middle East.

“Our power division had a very strong year, trading above our expectations,” Atkins said.

In February 2016, Hexicon appointed Atkins as an engineering partner for the world’s first multi-turbine offshore wind floating platform to be deployed at the Dounreay Trì Project off the Scottish north coast.

In 2015, Seaway Heavy Lifting appointed the company to design the jacket foundations for the Beatrice offshore wind farm. Atkins is also designing eight offshore substations across four of DONG Energy’s proposed offshore wind farms,

Furthermore, Statoil named Atkins as one of three winning companies of the Hywind Installation Challenge innovation campaign for the design of a novel assembly and installation concept for floating structures.

Atkins was also involved as an official advisor to DECC for their energy storage competition programme which supported UK businesses to develop and demonstrate innovative energy storage technologies.

On the activities aside from offshore wind, Atkins reported: “In November 2015, Stoke-on-Trent City Council appointed us as primary project consultant to deliver a ground-breaking new low carbon district heating network for the city. Our presence in the Middle East has been increased with the award by Hyundai Engineering and Construction to provide engineering design services for the Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority Mirfa independent water and power project. We have also been appointed to support the design and implementation of Dubai Airport’s energy management programme. As well as building our pipeline in the Middle East, our role supporting China Light and Power in Hong Kong is expanding as it looks at options to extend the life of its generating assets.”
