Australia: Alstom to Supply Gas-Insulated Substation for Wheatstone Project

Alstom to Supply Gas-Insulated Substation for Wheatstone Project

Alstom Grid Australia has been awarded a contract worth approximately $25 million from Bechtel to supply a 132 kV gas-insulated substation (GIS) for the Chevron-operated Wheatstone Project in Western Australia. The contract began in June 2012 and is due for completion in late 2015.

Alstom’s scope of work includes design, manufacturing, factory testing, supply, installation, pre-commissioning and testing of the complete substation. Around 40 Australian jobs will be created under the approximately three-year contract, which involves commissioning support for the 132 kV GIS and associated equipment, as well as on-site training.

The substation will be delivered inside a single, completely fitted and transportable pre-fabricated building manufactured by HVLV Pty Ltd in Perth, Western Australia. Such a delivery model provides significant benefits for this type of project including a reduction in the amount of installation and commissioning time required at a remote site.

Maurice Dres, Alstom Grid Regional Vice-President for Asia and Pacific, said: “This contract further demonstrates our ability to provide high value engineered solutions to support large scale infrastructure projects in Australia.”
