Australia: East Coast Pipeline Bags APLNG Contract

East Coast Pipeline Bags APLNG Contract

East Coast Pipeline has been awarded a $150 million contract to install polyethylene pipe for 145 wells at Spring Gully, North East of Roma as part of phase 1 construction of the Australia Pacific LNG Project.

The work will involve all the preparation, laying, welding and environmental rehabilitation and restoration associated with more than 600km of high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe that will transport extracted gas and water from these wells.

Australia Pacific LNG Chief Executive Officer, Page Maxson, said he was pleased to award a major contract to another local Queensland business. “Late last year we awarded the HDPE pipe supply contract to a Toowoomba-based company, so we are pleased to have another home grown business putting this locally made pipe into the ground,” Mr Maxson said. “East Coast Pipeline has been installing pipeline across Australia since 1972 and working alongside Origin in the gas fields since 2004. East Coast Pipeline is an industry leader in innovation and performance and Australia Pacific LNG will benefit from the company’s high safety standards and environment and cultural heritage experience.”

East Coast Pipeline is a privately owned Australian pipeline construction company that has successfully installed more than 6000 km of pipeline throughout Australia. As a result of the contract, East Coast Pipeline expects to employ up to 80 new staff and recently opened a new construction headquarters at Redcliffe to service the Australia Pacific LNG contract and the growing coal seam gas industry.

East Coast Pipeline Managing Director, Barry Waldron, thanked Australia Pacific LNG for the opportunity and said the company was proud to be chosen as a major contractor from a highly competitive international field. “The new contract (over three years) with Australia Pacific LNG is the first we’ve undertaken for the major CSG to LNG projects and provides a level of certainty for our business and employees,” said Mr Waldron.

“It’s not only good news for us but also for local businesses in the communities surrounding Spring Gully [and Roma] because they may have opportunities to support the work we’ll be undertaking.

“As a Roma boy, I’m really thankful for the opportunity to go back home and reconnect with old ties and hopefully share some of the benefits of this major infrastructure project.”

East Coast Pipeline is scheduled to commence preliminary work at Spring Gully at the end of July. The Australia Pacific LNG Project is a joint venture project between Origin, ConocoPhillips and Sinopec that includes development of existing coal seam gas fields in the Surat and Bowen basins and construction of a gas transmission pipeline from the gas fields to an LNG facility to be developed on Curtis Island in Gladstone
