Australia: Wilson Transformer Wins Wheatstone LNG Contract

A Victorian company has won a $21 million construction contract for the Wheatstone LNG project in Western Australia, and become the first Australian firm recognised as a certified global supplier of electrical equipment to international energy giant Chevron.

Wilson Transformer Company will supply transformers and neutral earthing resistors from its Glen Waverley manufacturing plant to Chevron Australia’s Wheatstone development in the Pilbara region.

As a certified global supplier, the company can now bid to supply electrical equipment to more than 100 Chevron projects worldwide.

The Minister for Industry and Innovation, Greg Combet, congratulated the company during a tour of the Glen Waverley plant, where the east coast launch of the Wheatstone Project’s Build Australia’s Future and Your Own campaign was announced.

The campaign aims to attract over 5,000 skilled and semi-skilled people to work on the Wheatstone Project. The project’s foundation phase is expected to see an investment in excess of $29 billion.

“The Gillard Government is committed to spreading the benefits of the resources boom nationally,” Mr Combet said.

“Wilson Transformer Company is an outstanding example of how smart manufacturing companies can get a share of the work flowing from Australia’s major resources projects.

“The company has a proven export history, a solid innovation track record and investment in new facilities and Chevron has recognised this by awarding the company the status of certified global supplier.”

The Federal Member for Bruce, Alan Griffin, said the potential benefits of the global supplier status granted to Wilson Transformer Company were enormous.

“This is a great example of a local company working hard and demonstrating that Australian industry is both capable and competitive in winning work in the resources sector,” Mr Griffin said.
