Bangladesh: Government Begins Capital Dredging Program

The government has undertaken a capital dredging program to make 24 important river routes navigable.

After the completion of this Tk 18.73 billion mega dredging scheme goods-laden vessels, including heavy cargo ships, will be able to move in all seasons on inland waterways, says Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).

The heavy vessels cannot move through the routes during all seasons because of draft obstructions. This project will help transport goods round the year,” a senior official of the concerned department at BIWTA said.

According to thefinancialexpress-bd.com, the authorities have fixed a target to complete the dredging of inland waterways by June, 2018.

The major rivers, which will come under the dredging coverage, are Buriganga, Dhaleswari, Meghna, Padma, Jamuna, Karnaphuli, Arial Kha, Titas, Surma, Kutubdia and Mahesshkhali Channel, Mongla-Ghasiakhali Canal, Dakatia, Madhumati, Atrai and Kangsa.
