Bangladesh: Government Begins Capital Dredging Project

The Bangladesh’s government has undertaken a capital dredging project involving Tk 11,000 crore to reclaim 53 rivers from encroachers.

Under this capital project, the BIWTA has procured three new dredgers from abroad while 10 new ones will be procured soon.

The Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan said the government will reclaim all rivers by evicting river grabbers. All illegal buildings and establishments will be removed, he added.

With the implementation of the plan, the country’s rivers will get back the lost glory and it will become very easy to carry passengers and goods through the water routes,” he said.

The Shipping Minister said that the development of a country depends on a developed communications system and proper plan and coordination are needed to set up a developed communications system.

“The government is working with sincerity to develop inland water ways and river ports,” concluded Khan.
