Boxships Collide in Port Klang

Two container ships collided while one of the vessels was performing berthing maneuvers in Westport harbor at Port Klang, Malaysia, on August 1, according to local media.

The 2009-built Northern Democrat was trying to berth when it grazed the 2010-built  MOL Empire, which was at the time docked at the quay.

The collision caused three of the containers from the Liberia-flagged Northern Democrat to fall into the sea. There was also some damage on a leg of one of the quay cranes.

Operations on the Hong Kong-flagged MOL Empire resumed shortly after the collision, and the 5,100 TEU vessel was allowed to leave the port once the loading and unloading was complete.

The 3,534 TEU Northern Democrat remained at the pilot station and was scheduled to berth at the quay later on in the day.
