A worker has died after an incident on a BP-operated platform in the UK North Sea.

The unnamed worker, employed by Cape plc, suffered a fatal fall while on the BP’s Unity platform, BBC writes. He was part of a Cape team carrying out routine maintenance on board BP’s Unity platform.

The incident happened around 4:40 am today, 110 miles east of Aberdeen.

“It is with deep regret that Cape confirms the death of an employee following an incident this morning,” Cape said in a statement.

Our thoughts go out to the deceased’s family, to whom we are offering every support. The deceased’s co-workers are obviously shocked and saddened and we are working alongside BP to ensure they receive the support they need

“We do not currently know the circumstances of the incident but will be working closely with BP, Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive on a full and thorough investigation,” the company said.

Police confirmation

Police Scotland in Aberdeen were made aware of a death offshore at around 4.40am this morning. (Thursday 4 September).

“The incident occurred on the Unity platform and enquiries to establish the circumstances are on-going,” Police Scotland said in a statement.

Lessons to be learned

Oil & Gas UK health & safety director Robert Paterson said: “We are shocked and saddened to hear there has been a fatality offshore today. While we are awaiting further details of this incident, our immediate thoughts go to the family, friends and work colleagues of this individual. Oil & Gas UK will look to ensure that any lessons which can be learned from this tragic event are shared across the industry.”
