Cheniere to build third berth at Sabine Pass LNG plant

Houston-based liquefied natural gas export player, Cheniere, has set the wheels in motion for the construction of the third marine berth at its Sabine Pass LNG facility in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. 

Cheniere’s unit Sabine Pass LNG, filed a request with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to start a pre-filing review process for the Sabine Pass LNG third berth expansion project at the end of last month.

FERC approved the pre-filing request saying the commission will evaluate the process made during the pre-filing process, once Cheniere files the application in September 2018.

The commission added that it has selected Perennial Environmental Services as the third-party contractor to assist in preparing the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation.

In its initial filing, Cheniere said it expects to receive FERC permit for the siting, construction and operation of the project no later than January 2020. Cheniere intends to file the project implementation plan before March 2020 and to start construction the following month.

Construction is expected to take 33 months to complete, Cheniere said in its filing.

The third berth will be located adjacent to the Sabine Pass Channel and will be sized to accommodate LNG carriers with transport capacity between 125,000 and 185,000 cubic meters of the chilled fuel.

The project includes the addition of piping, piperacks, utilities, and other additional infrastructure to transport the LNG to the new tie-ins and the third berth. The new marine facility consists of one jetty with LNG loading and LNG vapor return lines, Cheniere said.
