Collier County Leaders Plan to Expedite Renourishment Project (USA)

Collier County beach managers hope to speed up upcoming renourishment project.

Naplesnews.com reports that instead of waiting until fall 2013 to start a $31 million beach widening project, the county is talking with state and federal permitting agencies about ways to get a scaled-back version of the project started in January.

We would love it if it (the beach renourishment project) were sooner,” the county’s coastal projects coordinator Gary McAlpin said.

LaPlaya Beach and Golf Resort general manager Ron Vye said time is of the essence, but he worries about the effect of an expedited beach project on his hotel’s guests this tourist season.

The last time they did it during tourist season it was a disaster for us at LaPlaya,” Vye said. “It really upset a lot of our customers.”
