Cook Rescued from Jascon-5 Vessel (Nigeria)

One person has been found alive on Tuesday in a vessel that had sunk offshore Nigeria early on Sunday.

In an e-mail sent to Offshore Energy Today, the owner of the vessel informed that the man recovered is Okene Harrison, who was the vessel’s cook and of Nigerian nationality.

“Harrison was medically examined and he is currently in a stable condition and under treatment on board the diving support vessel,” said the Sea Truck’s spokesperson.

Jan Messchendorp, General Manager of West African Ventures, a subsidiary of Sea Trucks Group, said: “We are very grateful for the survival of Mr. Harrison. We express our sincere gratitude to our divers for their outstanding performance and their inexhaustible efforts made so far. Our thoughts continue to be with the families of the rest of the crew”.

The company added that the search and rescue operation would continue until all crew members are accounted for and “we are in the meantime offering all support possible to the families of the missing crew members. We have also commenced a full investigation into the cause of the incident.”

Also, unofficial sources claim that three bodies have been recovered from the ship, owned by Sea Trucks Group. The ship owner would not comment on these allegations.

The 31.3 meters long ocean going tug, Jascon-4, which worked for Chevron in Nigeria, capsized 15 Nm offshore Escravos due to rough seas while conducting a towing operation. Twelve crew members were on board at the time of the incident.
