Corporation: Erie Canal Fully Reopened (USA)

Erie Canal Fully Reopened

The final section of the Erie Canal between Lock E-11 (Amsterdam) and Lock E-15 (Fort Plain) that has remained closed due to flooding in the Mohawk Valley will be reopened today, the New York State Canal Corporation announced.

“I want to thank Canal Corporation employees and our contractors who have worked tirelessly to repair damage and safely reopen the system,” said Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton.

The Canal Corporation is also advising mariners that while the canal is reopening, caution should be used during navigation as repair work, debris clean up, and the re-stationing of buoys continues.

The controlling available depth in this section may be as little as 7.5′ at the time of reopening with dredging operations continuing at several sites between Lock E-12 (Tribes Hill) and Lock E-20 (Marcy). This section may not be open to deeper draft commercial traffic requiring more than 7.5′ of depth until Sunday, July 21.
