Crewman from Technip’s pipelay vessel dies after quayside incident

A crewman from one of Technip-operated pipelay vessels has died at Invergordon, Scotland as a result of an accident on the quayside. 

After several media reports said there has been an accident related to Technip’s pipelay vessel Deep Energy, Offshore Energy Today has reached out to the subsea engineering and construction firm seeking confirmation of these reports.

Technip’s spokesperson confirmed to Offshore Energy Today that a crewman died on Friday morning, April 22, 2016. The spokesperson explained that the accident did not happen on the vessel, but on the quayside while the vessel was in Invergordon port.

When asked about the cause of the incident, Technip’s spokesperson said that an investigation into the circumstances of the accident was ongoing.

The spokesperson added: “The incident was reported at 08:30, emergency services attended the scene and an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is in progress.

“Relatives of the crewmember involved have been informed. The company is offering support to family, colleagues and friends.”

Constructed in 2013, the Deep Energy is a DP class 3 pipelay vessel with the capacity to install rigid pipe, flexible pipe and umbilicals in water depths up to 3,000 m via the reel-lay method. The vessel is primarily designed to handle subsea installation of reeled rigid pipe of up to 18” (460mm) outer diameter.
