Croatia: 3. MAJ Shipyard Floats Out Tanker 717

Croatian shipbuilder 3. MAJ on June 30 2012, held the launching ceremony for a newbuild tanker (Yard number 717). The vessel built for the Swedish company WISBY TANKERS was launched from the shipyard’s slipway N0.2. This is the second vessel in a series of four tankers the shipbuilder 3. Maj is constructing for the Swedish owner.

The tanker, designed to carry concrete, oil and chemicals, is 133 meters long and 23 meters wide. The newbuild features the loading capacity of 15,000 DWT and is propelled by the 3.MAJ-Wartsila 6 RT Flex 35 engine (MAIN ENGINE OUTPUT 4500 kW at 144 min-1). At recent trials the engine easily produced the speed of 13.6 knots.

The ceremony saw the Deputy Minister of Economy Tamara Obradović Mazal responsible for the ceremonial breaking of a champagne bottle on the hull of the ship. Obradović Mazal cut the rope tethered to a bottle of champagne, which smashed against the hull of the tanker, sending the ship down the slipway.

Also, the Croatian Minister of Finance Slavko Linić was present at the ceremony.

Mr. Edi Kučan, CEO of the Croatian shipyard 3. Maj, stated on the occasion that the shipyard is working intensively on arranging new shipbuilding deals, adding that over 70 offers have been sent in that respect and that they are still waiting for concrete replies on the matter.

He pointed out that an agreement has been reached with the Uljanik plovidba, a Croatian ship management company, a part of the Uljanik Group, on the delivery of “Istra” vessel. The ship has already been completed and it is waiting for the hand over, which is expected before the summer break. Mr. Kučan added that the loan issue has been resolved, but that the administrative segment of the work is yet to be completed.

Following the launching ceremony of the 717, the shipyard took opportunity to lay a keel for the third newbuild tanker (Yard No. 719) for the Swedish company WISBY TANKERS.
