Croatia: 3. Maj Shipyard Launches Second Vessel for Wisby Tankers

At a ceremony held on June 30 2012, a newbuild tanker was launched from 3. Maj Shipyard’s Slipway No. 2. This is the second vessel in a series of four tankers the shipbuilder 3. Maj has constructed for the Swedish company WISBY TANKERS.

The tanker, designed to carry concrete, oil and chemicals, is 133 meters long and 23 meters wide. The newbuild features the loading capacity of 15,000 dwt with its main propulsion engine built at the shipbuilder’s factory for construction of engines and cranes.

Edi Kucan, CEO of the Croatian shipyard 3. Maj, stated on the occasion that the shipyard is working intensively on arranging new shipbuilding deals, adding that over 70 offers have been sent in that respect and that they are still waiting for concrete replies on the matter.

He pointed out that an agreement has been reached with the Uljanik plovidba, a Croatian ship management company, a part of the Uljanik Group, on the delivery of “Istra” vessel. The ship has already been completed and it is waiting for its hand over, which is expected before the summer break. Kucan added that the loan issue has been resolved, but that the administrative segment of the work is yet to be completed.

The ceremony saw the Deputy Minister of Economy Tamara Obradović Mazal responsible for the ceremonial breaking of a champagne bottle on the hull of the ship.
Obradovic Mazal cut the rope tethered to a bottle of champagne, which smashed against the hull of the tanker.

Croatian Minister of Finance Slavko Linic attended the ceremony as well.

Following the launching ceremony a keel was laid for the third newbuild tanker for the Swedish company WISBY TANKERS.

The mono- hull MACH BUREAU VERITAS class vessel features the following characteristics:

•  AUT-UMS,  SYS-IBS-1,  SYS-NEQ-1
• MON-SHAFT, INWATERSURVEY, CLEANSHIP (C), VCS

With the overall length encompassing 133.30 m and 23 m of breadth, the vessel is envisaged to work as an oil tanker, chemical tanker or asphalt carrier, withstanding the maximum cargo temperature of 250 °C.

In respect to other particulars the ship is characterized by 128.20 m of length between perpendiculars and 12.40 m of depth.

The designed draught of the vessel amounts to 8.5 m, while its deadweight at design draught is 15,000 tons.

Wartsila 6 RT Flex 35, being the main propulsion engine, enables the vessel to develop 13.60 kn of trial speed. The main engine output equals to 4500 kW at 144 min-1.
