Disabled Tanker Allowed into Las Palmas for Repairs

Fire-stricken Aframax Lady-M arrived into the port of Las Palmas, Canary Islands on Sunday having been given a special permission to enter port.

The Liberian-flagged tanker, loaded with 94,000 tonnes of fuel, suffered a fire in its engine room on May 14 in the Atlantic  while en route from Persian Gulf to Houston, the US, Spanish media reported.

The fire, which was extinguished by the crew, disabled the tanker some 500 nautical miles southwest of Ponta Delgada. All crew are reported to be safe.

The ship, owned by Atlas Maritime, was towed off Las Palmas, where it was inspected by officials of the port authority, before being allowed entrance.

The owner is reported to have arranged for the ship’s repairs that are expected to last around two weeks.
