DNV GL to class first LNG-powered bulkers

DNV GL informed that the ESL Shipping’s LNG-fueled bulk carrier will be built to its new set of classification rules.

The vessels being built by Sinotrans & CSC Qingshan Shipyard in China, set for delivery in 2018, are optimized for trading in the Baltic Sea Region, DNV GL said in a statement on Monday.

In November last year, ESL Shipping signed a deal with SSAB to order the two vessels that will cover the latter’s inbound raw material sea transports within the Baltic Sea and from the North Sea.

The two 25,600 dwt vessels are based on the Deltamarin B.Delta26LNG design and feature dual-fuel main and auxiliary machinery.

According to the classification society, the bulk carriers will be built to the new DNV GL rules for general dry cargo ships with DNV GL ice class 1A and will have type C LNG tanks of approximately 400 cbm capacity enabling bunkering at several terminals within the Baltic region.
