EEW SPC to Supply Monopiles for DONG Energy’s Hornsea Project One

DONG Energy has awarded a contract to EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH (EEW SPC) to manufacture all monopiles for the 174-turbine offshore wind farm, Hornsea Project One.

The companies previously announced a contract for 116 monopiles in November 2016, and now the contract has been extended to cover all 174 foundations for the wind farm.

Each monopile foundation has a diameter of up to 8.1m and weighs approximately 900 tons.

Claus Nørgaard, Engineering, Procurement and Construction director for the project said: “Hornsea Project One will be the first wind farm in the world to have a capacity of more than 1GW and will provide enough energy for well over one million UK homes. Using the same foundation solution for all turbines means we benefit from economies of scale and experience, and therefore maximize efficient construction of the project. “

“We are very pleased that DONG Energy placed their trust in EEW SPC again. This demonstrates the excellent relationship between our companies and we are looking forward to contributing in bringing this project to success,” said Michael Hof, COO/managing director at EEW SPC.

Hornsea Project One will be located 120km off the Yorkshire Coast. Onshore works began in 2016 and offshore construction will begin in late 2017.

The project is due to be completed in 2020.
