Eni resumes production at Goliat field. Reveals source of the incident

Following the power outage and the halt of production on the world’s northernmost offshore oil field – the Goliat – the production has now resumed.

Eni Norge, the operator, said it resumed production on the Goliat field early Tuesday morning. Full production is expected to be reached soon, with full reinjection of gas and produced water, the company said. To remind, production was shut down on Friday, August 26, 2016.

In its Tuesday update, Eni revealed that at the time of the incident gas was detected in an unwanted area, during a planned venting of gas, as part of a maintenance operation. This, Eni said, led to an automatic power shutdown to eliminate ignition sources, in line with emergency and safety routines.

During the power shut-down, non-essential crew was evacuated as per procedure due to limited power supply.

The incident was investigated internally and necessary organizational and technical improvement measures put in place, the company added.

The Goliat field is located in PL 229 in the south west Barents Sea, 80 km north-west of Hammerfest, Northern Norway. Production started on March 12, 2016 and Goliat was the fourth largest producer of oil on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in July.

Eni Norge is operator of the field (65 per cent) with Statoil as partner (35 per cent).
