Far EasTone Receives Approval to Connect Taiwan and China via Undersea Cable

 

Far EasTone Telecommunications Co., Ltd. received an approval to connect Taiwan and China via the first direct undersea cable link, the Focus Taiwan reported.

The cable should improve the quality of telecommunications between the two countries.

According to Far EasTone the project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year.

The company submitted the application in November last year and received approval from the National Communications Commission to start the project.

Channel News Asia citied National Communications Commission’s official as saying: “The cable will help reduce the cost of telecommunications between Taiwan and the mainland, currently done via routes crossing third territories like Japan.”

The cable will primarly link Damshui District in New Taipei, northern Taiwan, to Fujian Province in China and will have the capacity to connect with various other cables.

Besides the Far EasTone , the Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s leading telecom operator, will hold a 50 percent stake in this project.
