First APLNG Modules Arrive in Gladstone (Australia)

First APLNG Modules Arrive in Gladstone

The Australia Pacific LNG Project on Tuesday unloaded the first LNG modules on Curtis Island following their arrival into Gladstone Harbour over the weekend.

The first four modules were delivered to the Curtis Island site where these modules and others will be used as the foundation structure for the LNG processing trains and supporting infrastructure.

Australia Pacific LNG Downstream Project Director, David Lundeen, said that the arrival of the first four modules was a significant milestone for the project.

“The arrival of the modules at our site marks the start of the next stage of construction on Curtis Island. The site preparation work is complete, the concrete foundations have been laid and we are now ready for the larger components of the facility to be constructed,” Mr Lundeen said.

A total of 69 modules will arrive from the module construction yard in Batam, Indonesia over the next 18 months, however not all will require separate vessels. Shipments may contain up to seven modules of various sizes, taking an average journey of approximately 25-30 days.

The module yard in Indonesia, managed by Bechtel as the EPC contractor of the LNG facility, was selected through a competitive tender process to enable the fabrication and efficient transportation of large structures to meet the construction requirements of the LNG facility.

Bechtel Gladstone General Manager, Kevin Berg, explained that while one element of the facility was being constructed in South East Asia, over 2,300 people were now working on Australia Pacific LNG’s site on Curtis Island.

“Substantial progress has been made in a relatively short amount of time. This is credit to the workforce we have here in Gladstone, and the local suppliers on the ground who have enabled us to reach this point on schedule.” Mr Berg said.

Australia Pacific LNG has spent over $2.4 billion on contracts in Gladstone, with a total of $6.2 billion awarded in Queensland.
