ABP Southampton welcomed the 20,568 TEU newbuilding Milan Maersk on November 7, the largest containership to visit this port.

In 2016, the largest container vessel calling in Southampton had a capacity for 16,000 containers. So far this year, the terminal welcomed MOL Triumph and MOL Trust with a capacity for 20,170 containers.

The mega-ship belongs to the second generation of Maersk Line’s Triple-E class and is part of a series of eleven boxships which will be delivered to the company by the end of 2018.

Built at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea, Milan Maersk features a length of 399 meters and a width of 58.6 meters.

As explained, Milan Maersk’s propulsion and software system creates energy savings which aims to reduce carbon emissions per vessel by 35 percent.

“Milan Maersk is just the latest of these new megaships to visit the Port of Southampton. Not only are these vessels bigger – they are much cleaner too and we are seeing more of these new generation ships visiting across the port’s key trades,” Alastair Welch, ABP Southampton Director, commented.

The vessel will be calling Southampton as part of the AE1 service of the 2M alliance which connects Mainland China & Hong Kong to European & North Africa ports.

During the third quarter of this year, Maersk Line recycled three and took delivery of two out of 11 second-generation Triple-E vessels and three out of nine 15.2k TEU vessels ordered in 2015.

By the end of Q3, Maersk Line had 20 vessels in the order book, corresponding to 261k TEU, slated for delivery in 2017 and 2018. These include seven 20.6k TEU second generation Triple-E’s, six 15.2k TEU vessels and seven 3.6k TEU ice-class vessels.
