Gazprom Contracted 1.9 Bcm in Bergermeer UGS

Gazprom Group has contracted 1.9 bcm of capacity in Bergermeer underground gas storage facility (UGS) on a long-term basis from Abu Dhabi company TAQA. The UGS is located near Alkmaar in the Netherlands.

Gazprom Group took a share in the facility following a tender for supplying of “cushion gas”, organized in cooperation with the Netherlands’ Authority for Consumers and Markets. “Cushion gas” is needed to pressurize the reservoir.

When fully completed in April 2015, Bergermeer UGS will provide up to 4.1 bcm of working gas. The facility will nearly double the Netherlands’ capacity and become the largest gas storage reservoir with third party access in Europe. The volume of active gas in Bergermeer will be enough to provide 2.5 million households with energy throughout the year.

Bergermeer will significantly contribute to the security of European energy supply and create more efficient gas markets by increasing competition.

Besides Gazprom Group, capacity in the facility has been booked by Statoil, EDF, Vattenfall and other companies.
