Greece pushing for LNG back up plan for the Balkans

Greece pushing for back up plan for the Balkans

Greece is urging EU to set up a back up plan for the Balkans region in case of Russia’s gas supply cut off due to the Ukraine crisis.

Greek Energy Minister Yannis Maniatis sent a letter to European Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger proposing that surplus amounts of lower-priced LNG are not sold on to other destinations but rather that they are reserved for countries short on gas, reports Reuters.

He believes that in case of supply cut from Russia, Balkan countries would be hit a lot harder than other EU markets. His ministry warns that there is a strong risk of surplus LNG being shipped to Asia.
