Hill International to Manage Facility Construction at Tangier-Med

Terminal operator APM Terminals MedPort Tangier has awarded a contract for managing construction of a new container facility at the Tangier-Med Port Container Terminal in Morocco to US-based firm Hill International.

Under the two-year contract, Hill International will provide project management and supervision engineering services during the construction of the new facility.

The company said that the contract has an estimated value to Hill from EUR 5.4 million (USD 6 million) to EUR 6.7 million (USD 7.4 million).

Located on Africa’s northwest coast near the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea on the Strait of Gibraltar, the Tangier-Med port complex is one of the largest ports in Africa.

Earlier this year, APM Terminals MedPort Tangier, part of Dutch-based APM Terminals, was named as the operator of the new container transshipment terminal being built at the Tangier Med 2 port complex. The company already operates the APM Terminals Tangier facility at Tanger Med 1 port, which started operations in July of 2007 and handled 1.7 million TEUs in 2015.

The container terminal will be the second facility operated by APM Terminals at the Tanger-Med port complex designed to serve the newest Ultra-Large Container Ships (ULCS) with capacities of up to 20,000 TEUs.

The new facility will have up to 2,000 meters of quay length and increase the Tangier-Med complex’s overall capacity to over nine million TEUs.

Total investment in the new terminal is expected to be EUR 758 million (USD 813.4 million).

The new terminal is scheduled to open in 2019, under the terms of a 30-year concession agreement with the Tanger Med Special Agency (TMSA), which has responsibility for the development and management of the Tanger Med port complex.
