Hitachi Installs Its First 5MW Turbine

Japanese company Hitachi has completed the installation of  its 5MW downwind offshore wind turbine in Ibaraki prefecture.

The turbine, featuring permanent-magnet generator, medium-speed gearbox and a rotor diametre of 126 metres, will undergo testing throughout the summer.

The installation of the HTW 5.0-126 turbines next to the port of Kashima was delayed several times.

Hitachi started development of the 5MW turbine capable of withstanding the typhoon conditions in July 2012.

The company’s already developed 2MW turbine is operational at sites at Fukushima and Nagasaki prefectures.
